One year ago I had an amazing experience in Lapland, now I want to share with you some tips. I hope you wear your warmer coat and … let’s go on the memory train and here is my Top 8 must do things I recommend you to do for a one week roadtrip to the Artic Circle.
#1 Kiruna : visit the city, the mine
My first recommendation is to head to the city of Kiruna and that you take some time to visit the city, the mine and its history. It will also be really interesting to head to the get to the city hall and discover how they plan to move the entire city because of the mine expansion. Head North with me !
# 2 Sledge dog and Snowmobile activity
It seems like you can do this everywhere while heading North (in Canada, Finland or Norway) but it’s definitely THE activity to try : Sledge dog (enjoy the silence of the nature ) and maybe try to drive a snowmobile. Snow it !
#3 Visit or stay in the Ice Hotel or get married in the Ice Church
If you chose to visit Kiruna take some time and go visit the world renowned Ice Hotel and Ice bar. You can stay in one of the room or in a chalet. Did you know that you can get married in the Ice Church? The North can be really surprising and full of discoveries.
#4 Meet reindeer at a traditional Sami Farm
After wandering in the snow what could be better than to take a break at a Sami farm, pet and feed a reindeer that will follow with a gathering around a campfire. Listen to stories and take the chance to meet the people that made the country. My first meeting with reindeer was magical.
#5 Go to Abisko National Park
77km² of nature, wild life and mostly snow (of course). Challenge yourself by sleeping in the middle of a national park : catch northern lights, climb on the mountain and hike in the wild. Welcome to the North Pole.
#6 See the Northern Lights / Aurora Borealis
What’s the Number 1 reason to go to Lapland? It’s to have the chance to catch a glimpse of a aurora borealis. Seeing them dancing in the sky is magical. Catch the Northern Lights.
#7 See the Fjords in Norway
Another road trip inspiration for you is to organise and see the famous Fjords in Norway (Bergen, Trolltunga, Narvik….). Norway really hides some treasures and the fjords are definitely is a must do if you are a nature lover. See the lake that never froze and, maybe, you will see a wale !
#8 Visit the city of Narvik
Ultimately the last thing I recommend to do which is near Abisko is to visit Narvik. After all the excitement to take a walk. (Do you want to know more ? You can also read my article on Norway).
Here we go, at last I hope I gave you some inspirations and desire to go there !
